Indianapolis Colts sign Matt Hasselbeck to extension

Matt Hasselbeck is coming back for his 17th NFL season. The Indianapolis Colts announced a contract extension for the backup quarterback on Thursday.

NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport reports the extension is for one year and $3 million, per a source familiar with the deal.

Hasselbeck has extended his career by proving to be an excellent mentor for young quarterbacks like Jake Locker in Tennessee and Andrew Luck in Indianapolis. Hasselbeck threw 44 passes this season in relief of Luck, and was fairly effective with two touchdowns and over 300 yards.

Drafted in the sixth round by the Green Bay Packers in the same 1998 draft that included Ryan Leaf, Hasselbeck has maximized his talent throughout his career. He'll get at least one more chance to chase a Super Bowl ring.
