The San Francisco 49ers want to keep Frank Gore around for the long haul.
"I think we'll figure out a way. That's my feeling," team CEO Jed York told the San Francisco Chronicle when asked about the prospect of re-signing the veteran running back.
York's words echo those of coach Jim Tomsula, who told reporters at last month's NFL Scouting Combine that "talks are ongoing" with Gore ahead of Tuesday's free-agency launch.
"I mean, Frank Gore, we talk about all the things that he has -- you mentioned the leadership and the passion and all those things -- but let's not overlook that he is a prolific running back in the National Football League," Tomsula said at the time. "I'm a big Frank Gore guy."
Fellow runner Marshawn Lynch on Friday inked a two-year extension with the Seahawks that will pay him $31 million over the next three seasons. Gore won't come close to those numbers, but San Francisco likely looms as his best shot to approach the reported $4 million he seeks per season.
Gore, 31, played well down the stretch to notch his eighth 1,000-yard campaign in nine years. The hard-charging back sits near the top of a deep free-agent class of runners, but San Francisco appears genuinely interested in locking Gore down before the open market comes calling.
