Wisconsin running back Melvin Gordon had a succinct comment for teams considering drafting him: "If they draft me, they're going to get a great player."
Wisconsin had its pro day Wednesday, and Gordon was the center of attention. He and Georgia's Todd Gurley are expected to be first-round picks; no running back has gone in the first round in either of the past two drafts. Gordon (6-foot 5/8, 215 pounds) rushed for 2,587 yards in 2014, the second-highest total in FBS single-season history to Barry Sanders' 2,628 in 1988. Gordon, who had six 200-yard games in 2014, also rushed for 29 TDs.
Gordon considered turning pro after the 2013 season but remained in school.
"I came back to be a more complete football player," he told the NFL Network.
He said he thinks his decision paid off: "I feel like I'm a better player. And I'm a complete back."
Some question Gordon's pass-blocking abilities, and he is relatively untested as a receiver (22 career receptions). He was asked about that after his pro-day workout and noted that he wasn't really asked to do those things at Wisconsin. He also said that was a focal point of his workout.
"What I want them to see is that I can catch the ball," he said.
NFL Media analyst Daniel Jeremiah has Gordon as his No. 12 prospect overall and says Gordon "should be ready to contribute on all three downs in Year 1."
