Another safety is off the free-agent market.
Ron Parker will sign a contract to remain with the Chiefs, NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport reports, per a source informed of the situation. The deal is for five years and can max out at $30 million. The Kansas City Star first reported the deal Saturday.
The contract contains $25 million in base salary (including workout and roster bonuses) with $5 million in incentives tied to playoff appearances and interceptions. Parker gets $8 million guaranteed, including a $5 million signing bonus. The deal is believed to be the largest for an undrafted safety.
Previously a core special teams player, Parker started 15 games and played more than 1,000 snaps splitting time between safety and corner in 2014. He compiled 94 tackles, one sack and one pick.
The payday is a nice haul for a player who started just one game prior to 2014 and displays the Chiefs' belief in his future. Parker ranked as No. 91 on Around The NFL's top 101 free agents list.
The 27-year-old safety's versatility makes him an important keep for Andy Reid and Co., despite his sometimes up-and-down play last season. Pro Football Focus rated him their No. 73 safety last season.
Parker will team with Husain Abdullah and Tyvon Branch in the core of the Chiefs' back end.
The safety market continues to dwindle in the first week of free agency after Rahim Moore signed with the Texans for three years at $12 million and Antrel Rolle inked with the Bears for three years at $11.25 million ($5 million guaranteed).
