The Texans have been actively searching the secondary receiver market all offseason.
On Monday, they landed one of the best available.
Former Jaguars standout Cecil Shorts III has signed a deal with Houston, the Texans announced. NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport reports the deal is for two years and $6 million.
FOX Sports Ohio first reported the pact.
At 27, Shorts still has plenty of good years ahead of him and over-performed on a Jaguars team with few good options to get him the ball. His best season was in 2012 when he caught 55 passes for 979 yards and seven touchdowns from a combination of Chad Henne and Blaine Gabbert.
If nothing else, Shorts' route-running ability and sure hands are a worthwhile experiment for the Texans. They can place him alongside another playmaker in DeAndre Hopkins and offer him the chance to play in a strong rushing offense that could lead itself to some big plays.
While the quarterback situation won't improve drastically, Shorts' arrival should go a long way toward making things easier on Ryan Mallett and Brian Hoyer.
