In an unsurprising move the Oakland Raiders announced they have released quarterback Matt Schaub.
The Raiders traded a sixth-round pick for Schaub last offseason, but the 33-year-old lost the starting job to Derek Carr before the season even started.
Schaub became even more expendable when the Raiders signed quarterback Christian Ponder last week. Ponder and Matt McGloin will now battle for the No. 2 gig behind Carr.
Oakland saves $5.5 million in cap space by cutting Schaub.
Elbow tendinitis was one excuse for Schaub's poor play prior to be overtaken by Carr last preseason. However, as Around The NFL's Chris Wesseling broke down last offseason, Schaub no longer qualifies as an NFL-caliber arm.
Many veteran signal-callers get multiple chances to stick on rosters well after their play has fallen off a cliff. If a team with a young quarterback needs a cheap veteran mentor, Schaub could continue to get paid as a clipboard tutor. Otherwise the 11-year pro should be put to quarterback pasture.
