The Indianapolis Colts made an extremely difficult franchise decision on Thursday (not really).
The team officially announced that they've picked up the fifth-year option on quarterback Andrew Luck's contract. The superstar passer, who is in line to become the highest-paid quarterback in the NFL, will now be guaranteed $16.155 million for injury for the 2016 season.
In reality, this was a piece of paperwork that was so obviously going to be filled out that it might not have registered a passing thought in the mind of general manager Ryan Grigson.
Luck is now under contract for one more season, and the move gives the Colts some time to sort out what will inevitably be a monster extension. Luck has the security of knowing that he'll be compensated should an injury occur.
The 25-year-old hurled a career-high 40 touchdown passes last season along with 4,761 yards. In each of his first three seasons, the Colts have finished the season 11-5 and made the playoffs.
Grigson, who likes to tout his decision to select Luck over Robert Griffin III, has to be happy with himself on days like this. The Washington Redskins have less than a month to make a call on Griffin, and whether or not they want to lock in the troubled passer for another season.
A call on Luck wasn't nearly as difficult.
