NFL Media analyst Mike Mayock took questions for nearly two hours Thursday on a media teleconference, and linked a number of 2015 NFL Draft prospects with teams that could represent a potential fit. Here are some of the possibilities Mayock mentioned:
1. New York Jets:Oregon QB Marcus Mariota
It's difficult to say whether the Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback from Oregon will be available to the Jets with the No. 6 overall pick, but Mayock believes Mariota is a no-brainer selection for Gang Green if he falls that far. In fact, Mayock said the Jets should even consider a trade-up to land him.
2. Tennessee Titans: USC DL Leonard Williams
Mayock acknowledged the possibility that Tennessee could trade out of the No. 2 overall pick, but if the Titans stay put, Mayock sees the former Trojans star -- considered by some to be the No. 1 overall prospect in the draft -- as the pick that makes the most sense for them.
*3. Kansas City Chiefs*: LSU OL La'el Collins, Miami OL Ereck Flowers
Mayock said the Chiefs, who hold the 18th overall pick, have needs at both offensive tackle and guard, and either Collins or Flowers could provide the club with a strong option capable of playing either spot.
4. Jacksonville Jaguars: Alabama WR Amari Cooper, West Virginia WR Kevin White
While Mayock thinks the Jaguars could be better off taking a top defensive player third overall, he said a "compelling case" could be made for Jacksonville taking a wide receiver with the pick, given that the team finished last in the NFL in scoring offense (15.6 points per game) and has a developing quarterback in Blake Bortles. The Jaguars could have their choice of the draft's top two pass-catchers, Cooper and White, but Mayock said Cooper is the safer pick of the two.
5. New Orleans Saints, Arizona Cardinals: Nebraska DE Randy Gregory
Thanks to a positive drug test at the NFL Scouting Combine and a history of failed drug tests in college, the Nebraska pass rusher's draft status is difficult to peg. Mayock indicated Gregory could land at any number of draft slots, but mentioned either of the Saints' two first-round picks (Nos. 13 and 31) or Arizona at No. 24 as possibilities.
6. Green Bay Packers: ILBs Stephone Anthony (Clemson), Benardrick McKinney (Mississippi State) and Denzel Perryman (Miami)
Mayock believes the Packers intend to move linebacker Clay Matthews, who saw action at inside linebacker last season, back outside. That would free up a vacancy at inside linebacker, which could be nicely filled by one of those three 'backers, although Mayock said he doesn't have a first-round grade on any inside 'backers.
7. Detroit Lions: Texas DL Malcom Brown, FSU DL Eddie Goldman, Oklahoma DL Jordan Phillips, LSU OL La'el Collins, Miami OL Ereck Flowers
Mayock didn't discount the possibility of the Lions taking a skill-position player with the No. 23 overall pick, but suggested the club is more likely to address needs on the line of scrimmage.
8. San Francisco 49ers: Oregon DL Arik Armstead
Mayock: "I think he's a perfect fit for what they need. ... At No. 15, that makes sense."
9. Seattle Seahawks: Duke OL Laken Tomlinson, South Carolina OL A.J. Cann
Seattle doesn't pick until the No. 63 overall selection of the draft, at which point Mayock sees two interior linemen -- Tomlinson and Cann -- as quality options for Pete Carroll's team.
