Indianapolis Colts head coach Chuck Pagano is entering the final year of his contract without an extension.
But in listening to owner Jim Irsay, it sounds like talks will eventually lead to a new deal before kickoff in September.
"These things are ongoing a lot of times behind the scenes," Irsay told The Indianapolis Star. "We're working on contracts, whether it's management, coaches, players. We had discussions and it doesn't mean that they won't continue. It's not a Super Bowl-or-bust season or anything like that."
The last part is reassuring, if only because the organization has had that Super Bowl or bust feel for each of the last two seasons. General manager Ryan Grigson has continued an aggressive tear in free agency and the team has looked for immediate impact players early in the draft.
With a franchise quarterback already in tow, these decisions tend to take on a greater importance. Wasting Andrew Luck's prime years on a coaching staff that isn't a good fit would be devastating, but Pagano and offensive coordinator Pep Hamilton seem like an ideal pairing for the young quarterback.
We'll find out just how ideal Irsay thinks it is when we eventually see a proposal on the table.
"We were proud of our (2014) season and I really feel positive about Chuck and what he's done for us," Irsay said. "There's no question that he's accomplished a lot since he's been here."
