Despite what appeared to be some initial doubt, the Cardinals have decided to pick up the fifth-year option on wide receiver Michael Floyd.
That's the latest from Kent Somers, who says the 25-year-old receiver, and No. 13 overall pick in the 2012 NFL Draft, will earn a $7.3 million salary in 2016 guaranteed only for injury.
Picking up an option for a player like Floyd, an underused talent at a premium position, is a no-brainer.
If Floyd has a stellar season next year alongside Carson Palmer, the Cardinals get him reasonably cheap for one more year. If he continues to perform below expectations, the team can get around the money.
That's the real anti-climax to the fifth-year option season. Most of the players who still have potential or are still ascending will get it picked up. Simple as that.
