The first trade of the 2015 NFL Draft is in the books.
The Chargers on Thursday night swung a deal with the 49ers to move up two spots from No. 17 to No. 15 overall, where they grabbed tantalizing Wisconsin running back Melvin Gordon.
In return, San Francisco received San Diego's No. 17 overall pick along with the Chargers' fourth-round pick (No. 117) and next year's fifth-rounder.
"Stronger than people think," NFL Media's Mike Mayock said of Gordon, citing shades of LeSean McCoy and calling the newest Charger a weapon who immediately changes the complexion of San Diego's offense.
It's a pick Philip Rivers should be happy with on a day that saw the team refuse to trade away their franchise passer. With 4.52 speed and a 6-foot-1, 215-pound frame, Gordon has the natural ability to help the Bolts return to the run-heavy attack they sported at the end of the 2013 season.
Coach Mike McCoy's backfield is suddenly brimming with talent, armed not only with Gordon but also the promising Branden Oliver, passing-down weapon Danny Woodhead and veteran thumper Donald Brown.
With Todd Gurley and Gordon off the board, the next question is how teams like Dallas and Arizona will address deep holes at the position later in the draft.
