Quarterback Everett Golson is taking a trip through the Sunshine State this week, and he might be getting closer to choosing where he'll play his final season of college football.
Golson announced last week his intention to transfer out of Notre Dame and has already met this week with a pair of southern powerhouses badly in need of an experienced signal-caller. Florida State coach Jimbo Fisher confirmed to reporters on Tuesday that he did meet with Golson on Monday.
"We're negotiating," Fisher said, per ESPN. "... We never (promise) a guy he'll be the starter."
Could Golson be the answer Florida State is looking for as it attempts to replace No. 1 overall pick Jameis Winston? That remains to be seen. Golson nearly led Notre Dame to a win over the Seminoles in 2014 during a memorable game that came down to the final few plays.
FSU isn't the only Florida school Golson is considering, though.
Sports Illustrated reported that Golson met with Florida's coaching staff on Tuesday in Gainesville. New coach Jim McElwain also has an opening under center, but the situation is a bit more complicated in that that Golson would need a waiver from the SEC league office in order to be eligible for the Gators due to the conference's rules on graduate transfers.
Golson would be immediately eligible and would not need a waiver at a school outside of the SEC as a graduate transfer. However, Notre Dame has reportedly limited his transfer options to schools that are not on the team's 2015 schedule. The Irish do not have the Seminoles or Gators on the schedule this year. Golson has provided Notre Dame with a list of roughly 10 transfer destinations, and none have been blocked, per ESPN. The list reportedly included Florida State, Alabama, South Carolina and at least one program from the Pac-12, among others.
Golson passed for 3,445 yards last season but was benched down the stretch due to his penchant for turning the ball over. As a sophomore, he guided the Irish to an undefeated regular season and a berth in the national title game.
