The days continue to fall off the calendar and Michael Vick remains unattached to an NFL team. Could this be the end?
Vick has never had a problem finding a job in the past, but things are different following a shaky one-year engagement with the Jets. Nearing his 35th birthday, Vick no longer possesses the elite athleticism of his prime, and he didn't prove himself to be a productive backup last season. In the lowest moment of his season, Vick acknowledged being unprepared in a blowout loss to the Chargers.
During an appearance at a charity golf tournament this weekend, a reporter asked Vick if he still believed he could be an NFL starter.
"Absolutely," he replied, according to The Washington Times. "Yeah, I do."
NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport reported on Monday's edition of NFL Total Access that the quarterback thinks he can play another three years.
A new opportunity could take time to materialize. Teams are wrapping up their offseason OTAs and minicamps by next week and have largely settled on the rosters they want to take to training camp. It might take an injury for Vick's phone to ring. He says he'll be ready.
"I think when you're a veteran, you can do it," he said. "You understand everything that goes on throughout the course of an NFL season, throughout the course of a preseason. So you know how to pace yourself. You've just got to stay training. You've just got to work out. You have to make sure when you go in that you're in tip-top shape and not lagging, because if you do, it's going to show."
Vick didn't put great tape out there last season and it's hurting his market now. Vick still has the name -- whether he still has the game can be fairly questioned.
