Chicago Bears checking out Kyle Long at left tackle

The offensive line experiment continues during Chicago Bears minicamp.

Kyle Long took snaps at left tackle on Wednesday, per the Chicago Tribune's Brad Biggs.

The two-time Pro Bowl guard lined up at right tackle to being minicamp on Tuesday -- an extension of his time there during OTAs -- but took snaps at the more important left tackle spot yesterday.

Long's foray to tackle is partially due to Jermon Bushrod and Jordan Mills being sidelined with injury. It is also part of coach John Fox's plan to check out players at different positions during offseason work in order to find the best combination of starters.

"I think it is an injustice to just roll a guy, even as simple as it sounds, left to right (without preparation)," Fox said after practice. "Whether you are doing it with a corner an outside backer, a guard or a tackle, they need to practice it. This is a good time of year to get the techniques, get the sets and all of the different communication that has to happen with the O-line getting that valuable reps and experience."

With starters missing time due to injury, Fox has a perfect excuse to experiment with Long all across the line. If the third-year pro performs well, the Bears could slide him to a more valuable position. If not, Chicago knows it still has one of the best guards in football.
