Geno Smith readies for voluntary Jets summer camp

Move over, Mark Sanchez. There's a new big name in voluntary offseason Jets passing camps.

Quarterback Geno Smith confirmed a version of Sanchez's old "Jets West" camp on Wednesday during his youth football camp in New Jersey. Smith said it's supposed to go down in Chicago, a change in location due to the recent birth of Brandon Marshall's twins.

"Yes, we will all be getting together," Smith said, via the New York Post. "It's about a month from us reporting for camp, so it's very important for us to continue to build on what we ended with back in minicamp."

Though the intention was not to give Smith a leg up on Ryan Fitzpatrick, he'll be the only arm at his workouts.

"I'll probably be the only quarterback there," Smith said. "It's welcome to anyone who wants to come. It's not like I'm barring them from coming. If they want to they can be there too."

The idea of a Jets offseason passing camp will likely elicit rolled eyes from those who remember Sanchez's "Jets West," a high-profile California affair with sponsored contests and prizes.

But this seems to be a pared down version from Smith, albeit an encouraging one. Sanchez didn't need to work as hard to get the rest of the team on his side. Smith, though, seems to be making progress.
