NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport reported Monday that Elam will miss the 2015 season after tearing his biceps during a full-contact practice on Sunday, per a source informed of the situation. Elam is seeking a second opinion, but the safety needs surgery to repair his injury.
The Baltimore Sun first reported the news.
Ravens coach John Harbaugh didn't sound too optimistic about Elam's injury over the weekend.
"I haven't heard on the MRI yet, but I'm not real optimistic right now," Harbaugh said, via The Sun. "I haven't heard a final word, but it wasn't very optimistic talking to the doctors. He was reaching, the receiver ran by him and kind of reached for him and caught him."
Elam struggled throughout his first two seasons, earning special attention from general manager Ozzie Newsome, who wants nothing more than for Elam to reach his potential.
He was on the field for fewer than 500 snaps last season given his liability in coverage and penchant for missing tackles. Pro Football Focus graded him as one of the seven worst safeties against the pass in football.
The raw talent and ability is there for the former All-American. Unfortunately, he'll need another season to get back and try again.
