Ohio State's Joey Bosa isn't the only top talent who will be sitting out the first week of the college football season. Tyler Boyd, one of the top wide receivers in college football, will be suspended for Pittsburgh's first game of the season following a DUI charge.
New Pitt coach Pat Narduzzi has suspended defensive end Rori Blair, who was charged with DUI in a separate case, for one game as well. Pittsburgh opens the season against Youngstown State on Sept. 5.
"In addition to their game suspensions, Tyler and Rori have been, and will continue to be, subject to internal discipline and accountability," Narduzzi said, according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. "The situations were very disappointing and both young men have expressed their regret. Our expectation is that each of them, as well as our entire team, will learn from their mistakes and be better for it moving forward."
Last month, Boyd was sentenced to 12 months of probation and ordered by a judge to take driver safety classes following his arrest on a DUI charge in June. He was initially suspended, then reinstated to the team after a month. However, Narduzzi hinted at the ACC Football Kickoff event last month that Boyd's reinstatement to the team didn't necessarily signal the end of team disciplinary action. Although Pitt should have no trouble dispatching FCS Youngstown State without Boyd, for a new coach like Narduzzi, the suspension of the team's best player should send a strong message in the locker room.
Boyd, a junior, caught 78 passes for 1,261 yards and eight touchdowns as a sophomore last season.
The team opens fall camp on Aug. 9.
