BYU QB Taysom Hill to miss season with foot injury

For the second year in a row, Taysom Hill's season has ended on a bitter, early note.

BYU's star quarterback exited the Cougars' 33-28 comeback win over Nebraska with a foot injury in the third quarter Saturday, and BYU coach Bronco Mendenhall confirmed after the game that Hill won't return this season.

Last year, Hill had posted Heisman Trophy-worthy numbers until he suffered a severe knee injury against Utah State in the fifth game of the season. Following extensive offseason rehabilitation, Saturday's BYU opener against the Cornhuskers represented Hill's return to the field. He completed 21 of 34 passes for 268 yards, and rushed for another 72 yards and two touchdowns, before his latest injury.

Mendenhall said he was unsure if the fourth-year senior would take a medical redshirt for 2015 and attempt a comeback in 2016. As a freshman in 2012, another knee injury ended Hill's season. His history of injuries will be of significant concern to NFL scouts if he pursues a pro football career, although the 6-foot-2, 235-pound Hill has already done plenty to prepare for life after football -- whenever that might come.

BYU backup Tanner Mangum won the game with a last-second Hail Mary.
