Todd Gurley ruled out Week 1; Tre Mason 'doing well'

Uncertainty turned to doubtful, which became official Saturday: Todd Gurley won't play Week 1.

St. Louis Rams coach Jeff Fisher announced the team's first-round pick would miss the opener against the Seattle Seahawks.

The announcement comes as no surprise. The Rams have been cautious with Gurley's return from an ACL tear. The 6-foot-1, 227-pound back has yet to see any game action in the NFL. When the Rams plan to unleash him remains a question mark.

As for the team's opening week backfield, Fisher was more optimistic about Tre Mason's chance to play, after the second-year back suffered a hamstring injury.

"Tre's doing good," Fisher said Saturday, via the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. "He had two treatment sessions today and he's doing well. So we'll see how he is during the week."

If Mason can't go, Benny Cunningham likely would get the start to open the season.
