Robert Griffin III cleared from concussion

Robert Griffin III has finally been cleared to play.

During an interview on WTOP Radio, Redskins team president Bruce Allen announced RGIII was cleared to play by doctors after missing the past several weeks with a concussion.

"Robert has been cleared to play from the concussion, we got the documentation last night," Allen said.

Griffin suffered a concussion during a preseason game on Aug. 20. After the Redskins initially announced the quarterback had been cleared the following week, an independent neurologist determined he was not ready to return.

Since RGIII suffered the concussion, he has lost the starting gig to Kirk Cousins, who will lead the Redskins on Sunday against the Miami Dolphins.

"There won't be another shoe drop," Allen said when asked about the starting job. "Coach (Jay) Gruden did say that Kirk Cousins is our starter for this year and that's what we're gonna do."

Whether or not Gruden decides to make RGIII active and where on the depth chart he lands -- No. 2 or No. 3 -- remains to be seen.

The coach has insisted that he wouldn't make a decision about whether Colt McCoy or Griffin would be the backup until RGIII had been cleared.

Now that the concussion issue is being put in the rear-view mirror, how RGIII responds when he gets his next on-field opportunity will be key -- whether that chance comes in Washington or another location.

Update: Robert Griffin III was listed as inactive for Sunday's game against the Dolphins.
