The Rutgers student who Scarlet Knights wide receiver Leonte Carroo allegedly picked up and slammed onto a concrete surface has quit her job at the school's football facility and is concerned, because of Carroo's status as the team's biggest star, that she will be blamed for the domestic violence assault charge that Carroo is facing.
"I have never been so scared," the woman told The Record, which did not identify her. "... I hope people don't blame it on me."
According to the report, Carroo and the woman were romantically involved at one time, and Carroo's current girlfriend was among a group of people who confronted the alleged victim outside High Point Solutions Stadium following Rutgers' 37-34 loss to Washington State on Saturday. The alleged victim said she believed the girlfriend was upset by her previous involvement with Carroo.
According to the woman, Carroo grabbed her from behind during the argument when the alleged assault occurred.
"He picked me up and just dropped me," the woman said. "I remember that slam. I remember hitting the ground and seeing all those people around me. ... He knows his own strength. He shouldn't have done it. I'm 107 pounds. He shouldn't have thrown me into the concrete."
Carroo's attorney, Peter Gilbreth, said he has entered a plea of not guilty of domestic violence assault on behalf of his client. Carroo's court appearance is set for Oct. 1.
Carroo was suspended indefinitely from the team by coach Kyle Flood, who himself was subsequently suspended from coaching for three games due to a separate matter. Carroo made 55 catches for 1,086 yards and 10 touchdowns for the Scarlet Knights in 2014, and had played well in two games this season prior to his suspension.
The alleged victim was treated and released from St. Peter's University Hospital with non-serious injuries to her left side, including her elbow, hip, and the side of her head.
