Amid firing reports, Maryland states Randy Edsall is 'our coach'

The University of Maryland issued a statement Thursday on the heels of a report that head coach Randy Edsall would likely be fired following Saturday's road game at Ohio State.

But while the statement expressed support for the 57-year-old coach, it didn't refute the report.

"Randy Edsall is our head football coach, and he'll be on the sidelines Saturday against Ohio State," a school spokesman said, according to The Baltimore Sun.

Insidemdsports.com reported earlier Thursday that, with Maryland entering its bye week next week, a midseason change would likely be made after the Terrapins' Big Ten game at OSU. ESPN later reported that Edsall will not be Maryland's coach next season. Edsall, the former defensive backs coach of the Jacksonville Jaguars, will no doubt use the reports as motivation for his players as the Terrapins look to upset the Buckeyes at home and even their record at 3-3 on the season.

This tweet was posted to Edsall's Twitter account on Thursday.

Knocking off an Ohio State team, ranked No. 1 in the nation, would put Edsall's program in an entirely different light. And as unlikely as that might seem, the Buckeyes have shown inconsistency in narrow wins over Northern Illinois and Indiana.

According to Insidemdsports.com, Maryland would have to pay Edsall $2.6 million if he is fired, covering his 2016 salary plus a $500,000 buyout.
