While some veterans don't want to be shipped out of town ahead of Tuesday's 4 p.m. ET trade deadline, others don't sound like they'd mind too much.
San Francisco 49ers tight end Vernon Davis has heard his name pop up in trade rumors.
"It's a possibility; you know there's nothing I can do about it," Davis said Sunday, via the Sacramento Bee. " ... I'm a positive believer. I believe everything works its way out for the good for those who are good people. But I'm always prepared for anything. Nothing new surprises me."
Davis said he hasn't spoken to general manager Trent Baalke, but has had discussions about his future with his agent.
The 31-year-old tight end is a free agent after the season. He still possesses the skills to get open, but hasn't caught a touchdown pass since Week 1 of 2014 and has just 18 receptions for 194 yards in six games this season. In Sunday's blowout loss to the St. Louis Rams, Davis had six catches for just 24 yards.
With the 49ers in clear rebuilding mode, moving Davis, who seems unlikely to return next season, makes sense. His skills have declined enough that it shouldn't cost much to pry him away from the draft-pick hoarding Baalke. A change of scenery and playing in an actual functioning NFL offense could rejuvenate the former first-round pick.
While most NFL trades don't happen, shipping Davis out of San Francisco makes sense for every party. It doesn't sound like the tight end would mind leaving the spiraling team either.
