LSU running back Leonard Fournette's jersey from his game against South Carolina, along with LSU and South Carolina helmets autographed by LSU coach Les Miles and former South Carolina coach Steve Spurrier, raised $101,000 in an online auction to aid South Carolina flood victims.
It sets a record for highest price paid for a game-worn college football jersey in an Internet auction, according to ESPN. The previous high was $31,070, per the report.
LSU was scheduled to play at South Carolina on Oct. 10, but the game was relocated to LSU just days before the game because flooding in Columbia, S.C., forced a change of venue. Fournette said after the game he wanted to auction off his jersey to help flood victims. The auction was handled through the school and required NCAA permission.
The autographed helmets were used in the game as well, and the 45-24 LSU win turned out to be legendary South Carolina coach Steve Spurrier's final game. He resigned two days later. Fournette, a leading candidate for the Heisman Trophy, said he was motivated to help the flood victims as a Hurricane Katrina survivor at age 10.
Bidding began Saturday morning at $7,000 and closed on Monday.
