The New Orleans Saints have a new backup quarterback.
Saints coach Sean Peyton revealed during a radio interview Monday that the team is signing veteran passer Matt Flynn. Flynn confirmed the signing on Twitter.
The move comes after Luke McCown suffered a lower back injury that will require season-ending surgery. The Saints have placed him on injured reserve. McCown started one game this year, playing well in a loss while Brees was sidelined with a shoulder issue.
Brees is a little more than a week removed from an NFL-tying seven-touchdown performance against the Giants, so there are no longer any health concerns about the star. Flynn is best known for his multi-tour duty as a backup to Aaron Rodgers in Green Bay. He's also had stops in Seattle, Buffalo and Oakland.
Flynn spent training camp with the New York Jets, but was cut before the start of the regular season. He's worked out with two teams since then, but didn't land another gig. Unsuccessful tryouts were followed by tweets of deliciousalcoholic beverages.
Now the booze goes on the shelf for a couple months.
