It was only fitting that on a night when a driving rainstorm hampered the normally prolific Baylor and TCU offenses, a defensive stop decided the game. TCU defeated Baylor 28-21 in double overtime Friday when Julius Lewis and Ty Summers stuffed Baylor running back Devin Chafin on fourth-and-1 to knock the visiting Bears out of the College Football Playoff picture.
Baylor's loss means Oklahoma's road game at Oklahoma State Saturday will determine the Big 12 champion and, perhaps, a berth in the CFP's four-team field.
After lightning delayed the start of the game for nearly an hour, rain forced both teams to rely more heavily on their running games than usual. Baylor was more effective in that regard, outrushing the Horned Frogs 273-154, but committed five turnovers. The game was tied 14-14 at the end of regulation.
Baylor entered the game with the No. 1 offense in the nation at 644.1 yards per game, while TCU's offense ranked third at 588.2. With the downpour making both vertical passing attacks futile, Baylor had just 335 yards on the night and TCU finished with just 302. The combined for just eight third-down conversions in 39 attempts.
TCU quarterback Trevone Boykin ran for a 1-yard touchdown in the first overtime and threw an 8-yard touchdown pass in double overtime for the win. Baylor quarterback Chris Johnson, the Bears' third-stringer at the beginning of the season, threw for just 62 yards. Chafin led all rushers with 119 yards on 26 carries and two touchdowns.
