Reggis Ball had a 53-yard interception return for a touchdown Wednesday in his final college game with the Memphis Tigers, but in a bizarre incident after the game, the fifth-year senior made sure his big play isn't what he'll be remembered for.
Ball was involved in an altercation with an Auburn equipment manager following Auburn's 31-10 win over Memphis in the Birmingham Bowl, and stole one of Auburn's footballs. Ball had two interceptions in the game, and according to the Ledger-Enquirer, he's been known to try to steal footballs from the opposition in any game in which he makes an interception. Video taken by a fan surfaced, as well.
Memphis athletic director Tom Bowen issued a formal apology, announcing that Ball had been "removed" from the football team:
For a fifth-year senior, of course, that's not exactly punitive action. What exactly will Ball miss out on? The team banquet? There isn't exactly much of a punishment to be extracted from a player whose career has ended, and with Memphis transitioning between head coaches, perhaps Ball felt all the more empowered.
Regardless, Ball certainly found a way to render a two-interception day, in a losing effort, more meaningless to everyone but him. Naturally, Ball posted his prize on social media, complete with an autograph right under the AU logo.
