The Kansas City Chiefs have a new offensive coordinator. Actually, they have two.
The team announced Thursday that Brad Childress and Matt Nagy will serve as co-offensive coordinators. The pair replaces Doug Pederson, who vacated the gig to become head coach of the Philadelphia Eagles.
Childress had been the team's spread-game coordinator for the past five seasons. Prior to that, he spent five seasons as the head coach of the Minnesota Vikings. Nagy has been Kansas City's quarterbacks coach for the past three years.
Reid told reporters on conference call that Childress will handle game-day duties from a box while Nagy works the sideline. Reid will continue to call plays.
"We went through our process of finding an offensive coordinator and determined having coach Childress and coach Nagy serve as co-coordinators would benefit our football team the most," Reid said, per the team's official site.
"They both have a great feel for our system. Brad lends a tremendous amount of experience and knowledge to our offense. Matt has done a nice job tutoring the quarterbacks the last three years and will continue to work with the QBs, but will also take the next step in his professional growth and coordinate the offense with Brad."
Make no mistake: This will remain Reid's show on offense, and feel free to view this as a crafty veteran coach deciding it's better to give two of his valued assistants a higher profile than one.
