Fletcher Cox: I want to be in Philly 'for the long haul'

KAHUKU, OAHU, HAWAII -- Eagles defensive lineman Fletcher Cox was a Pro Bowl snub for two-straight seasons leading up to his nod this season. But his first trip to Hawaii is coming at a good time for the fourth-year pro, who has just one year left on his deal.

After 2016, Cox knows he can play anywhere. But for now, he doesn't plan on leaving Philadelphia anytime soon.

"I wanna be there, that's where I want to be -- for the long haul," Cox told Around The NFL on Thursday. "I think the team wants me there, everyone wants me there from the owner all the way down."

Cox's comments jibe with recent reports that suggest the Eagles are already working on a long-term extension. With new head coach Doug Pederson trying to solidify his team alongside new defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz, Cox is the kind of versatile player that can be effective across multiple defenses.

"That's the thing about it, you gotta embrace it and enjoy the process," Cox said.

Pro Football Focus had him rated below only J.J. Watt among the best 3-4 defensive ends. Cox finished the season with 9.5 sacks and 50 tackles. On film this season, a certain ruthlessness stood out despite the grind that comes with playing in a Chip Kelly defense.

Should the Eagles let him slip through a healthy 2016 unsigned, Cox would undoubtedly be one of the biggest free agents on the market. In a class that could include Star Lotulelei, Dontari Poe, Calais Campbell, Cameron Wake, Sheldon Richardson and many more, his name would still rise to the top given his versatility.

Cox is thankful he has time to think about it and relax, though.

"It's a time to relax and hang out," Cox said. "I've enjoyed hanging out with the guys and just seeing their true character -- how funny and laid back everyone is."
