The Indianapolis Colts are cleaning house behind Andrew Luck.
After letting free-agent veteran passer Matt Hasselbeck walk, the team on Monday releasedJosh Freeman.
The enigmatic Freeman has bounced around from club to club, but the move comes as a surprise after reports surfaced that the former Bucs starter was seen inside the building as Luck's likely backup for next season.
With fellow Colts reserve Charlie Whitehurst also set to hit free agency, the team is down to just Stephen Morris behind Luck in the quarterback room.
The Colts hope nobody besides Luck sees meaningful snaps, but last season highlighted the need for a developmental arm. While Hasselbeck played admirably, age and injuries took their toll on the 40-year-old signal-caller.
With Robert Griffin III among the quarterbacks set to hit the open market -- and a full complement of passers available in the draft -- the Colts can find someone more reliable than Freeman, who might have been released for the last time.
