The New York Jets are lifting weights and working out -- but not Muhammad Wilkerson.
Gang Green's offseason program launched Monday minus the services of their star defensive end, who is not expected to attend the team's offseason program, per multiple reports.
Rehabbing from the broken leg he suffered in Week 17, Wilkerson has yet to sign his $15.7 million franchise tag. His absence could very well extend into June's mandatory minicamp, with both sides no closer to the long-term pact Wilkerson has sought for two straight offseasons.
Wilkerson has also been the subject of trade talks ahead of next week's NFL Draft, but moving the lineman would require another team to work out a massive long-term pact for the sixth-year defender.
Wilkerson is a beast on the field, operating as one of the NFL's premier ends with a whopping 28.5 sacks over the past three seasons. He's a key player for a Jets defense that also saw nose tackle Damon Harrison sign with the Giants in free agency.
The Jets don't want to let another defensive gem walk out the door, but Wilkerson could be history by the end of April if general manager Mike Maccagnan finds a trade partner willing to play ball.
