Alabama offensive tackle Cam Robinson, one of college football's top players, was arrested early Tuesday morning.
Robinson was booked into Ouachita Parish Correctional Center in his hometown of Monroe, La., on a felony charge of illegal possession of stolen firearms and a misdemeanor charge of possession of a controlled dangerous substance, according to Ouachita Parish Sheriff's office records. He was also charged with illegal carrying of a weapon in the presence of narcotics.
Robinson, a junior who is entering his third year as a starter, was ranked as the No. 13 player in college football earlier this month by NFL Media analyst Chad Reuter.
Crimson Tide defensive back Laurence "Hootie" Jones was also booked into the Ouachita Parish Correctional Center early Tuesday on charges of possession of a controlled dangerous substance and illegal carrying of a weapon in the presence of narcotics. Jones, a junior, has appeared in 16 games over the past two seasons, recording four tackles.
Alabama head coach Nick Saban released a statement regarding the incident later on Tuesday.
"We are aware of the situation involving Hootie Jones and Cam Robinson and are in the process of gathering facts to determine what internal action needs to be taken," Saban stated.
Saban also addressed the situation in an interview with WNSP-FM on Tuesday.
"We all have a responsibility and obligation to represent the university, ourselves and our family in a first-class way," Saban said. "Obviously, we're a little disappointed that better choices and decisions weren't made here, but until we get the facts, we don't really have much else to say about it."
The players were arrested after a police officer approached Robinson's vehicle in the parking lot of a park at 2:33 a.m. and smelled marijuana, per a Monroe Police Department release. The officer saw a handgun in the lap of Jones, according to the release. Robinson and Jones complied with the officer's request to step out of the vehicle, and the officer found marijuana and an additional handgun that was reported stolen from Baldwin County, Ala., upon searching the vehicle, per the release.
Robinson and Jones both posted bond, according to the MPD.
The MPD release stated that the case has been forwarded to the District Attorney's Office and that the investigation is ongoing.
