After failing to land an NFL contract after tryouts with two different clubs, Vernon Adams has found a football home.
The former Oregon quarterback has signed with the Canadian Football League's Montreal Alouettes. The BC Lions traded Adams' rights to the Alouettes for a 2017 first-round draft pick on Friday, and the deal was completed over the weekend. Adams was not selected in the 2016 NFL Draft, and tryouts with the Seahawks and Redskins did not result in an undrafted free agent contact.
In the days leading up to the draft, Adams said he believed he's a better quarterback than Jared Goff, who was chosen No. 1 overall out of Cal by the Rams. Adams didn't have quite the same confidence in comparing himself to Eagles first-round pick Carson Wentz, who was chosen No. 2 overall, saying "He's the only quarterback in this draft that I can literally say, 'He's better than me.'"
NFL Media senior analyst Gil Brandt believes Adams is well-suited for the CFL. Adams gave some consideration to trying out for the CFL instead of playing at UO when his eligibility to play for the Ducks was in question last summer. Of course, a move from the CFL back to the NFL could always be a possibility for Adams. Two examples of NFL quarterbacks who came from the CFL: Pro Football Hall of Famer Warren Moon, and Doug Flutie.
Adams transferred to Oregon last year after a prolific career at FCS Eastern Washington. A finger injury hampered his only season with the Ducks, but he still managed a 26-6 TD-INT ratio. He was outstanding at the East-West Shrine Game in January, leading a 29-9 win with three touchdown passes.
