After a decade in the NFL, defensive end Stephen Bowen is calling it quits.
The Washington Redskins announced Wednesday that Bowen is retiring. The former Cowboys, Redskins and Jets defensive end played 128 games, compiling 176 tackles, 12.5 sacks and nine passes defensed. Bowen signed a one-day contract to retire from the league as a member of the Redskins.
Undrafted out of Hofstra, Bowen's best years came in Washington -- after five seasons in Dallas. In his first year with the Redskins in 2011 Bowen set career highs in tackles (41) and sacks (6). Bowen's teammates voted him as the recipient of the Ed Block Courage Award that year after he put up career-highs despite undergoing personal tragedies, which included the passing of his four-month-premature son, Skyler, and his mother-in-law, Muriel Johnson.
The run-stuffing defensive end was voted defensive captain for Washington's 2012 NFC East championship team.
Bowen appeared in 15 games for the New York Jets in 2015, his final NFL campaign.
