Jason Pierre-Paul will celebrate an infamous anniversary this July 4th, one year after he damaged his right hand in a fireworks accident.
The New York Giants' pass rusher is hoping his mistake can be a lesson for others this Independence Day.
JPP made a PSA with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, which aired Thursday.
"In a split second it blew off my whole hand," Pierre-Paul says in the PSA. "All I could do was think about my son and was I going to make it. Now I'm truly blessed to be alive. Now when I look at fireworks I think about safety."
Per ABC News, in the months surrounding the Fourth of July holiday, about 230 people go to the emergency room every day with fireworks-related injuries, according to figures from the CPSC.
The view of JPP's mangled hand is a real-life reminder of the dangers of explosives and how a Fourth of July celebration can turn horrific in an instant.
