Washington State starting safety Shalom Luani was arrested early Wednesday morning on a preliminary charge of second-degree assault, which is a felony.
Luani became upset because his order at a Domino's Pizza was taking too long, and after being asked to leave the premises, he got into an altercation with another customer, according to Pullman Police Department spokesperson Chris Tennant.
Luani was cursing and screaming about his wait, refused to take a refund when offered, and struck a 20-year-old victim with an open hand, Tennant said. The altercation then moved outside the restaurant, and the victim was later diagnosed with a broken nose, per Tennant.
"Alcohol was involved with both parties," Tennant said. "Luani was cooperative with police and was released later in the morning."
Luani posted a message to his Facebook account late on Wednesday and apologized to his family and friends.
"I'm very sorry I let you all down, but that doesn't change who I am," he stated. "I'm still the same Shalom, and if you know me you would know I would never fight over something like that."
The police report will be forwarded to a prosecutor who will determine formal charges, Tennant said.
Luani, a senior, led the Cougars in interceptions (4) and pass breakups (6) last season, while making 90 tackles. He was chosen honorable mention All-Pac-12, and on Tuesday was selected to the Reese's Senior Bowl watch list.
