Eric Berry signs franchise tender, to practice Monday

Eric Berry is officially back.

The Kansas City safety reported Sunday and signed his franchise tender, the team announced. Berry will practice with the Chiefs on Monday. NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport first reported on Friday that Berry would return early this week.

"He's in great shape. It's great to have him here," coach Andy Reid said of Berry.

Reid added that he's leaning against playing Berry in Thursday's preseason finale against the Green Bay Packers.

The coach said last week he wasn't worried about Berry's conditioning and believed the safety would be in shape to play Week 1, despite skipping all team-run activities this summer.

Berry and the Chiefs did not agree on a long-term extension prior to the July 15 deadline, meaning he'll play 2016 on the $10.806 million tag. Until Berry signed his franchise tender on Sunday, the safety was not under contract, therefore not susceptible to being fined for skipping workouts. The sides can't negotiate a long-term deal until after the Chiefs season is over.
