Notable cuts roundup: Texans cut wideout Cecil Shorts

Aaron Dobson's run with the New England Patriots has come to an end.

The 6-foot-3 receiver was released Saturday as the Pats cut their roster to 53 players, the team announced.

The 2013 second-round pick spent the past two seasons dealing with injuries and inconsistent play that stymied his growth after a promising rookie season. Dobson had just 16 receptions and zero touchdowns in the past two years.

Dobson displayed flashes of potential this preseason, including some rapport with Tom Brady, but it wasn't enough to stick in a deep Patriots receiving corps.

New England also cut wide receiver Keshawn Martin, who caught 24 balls for 269 yards in eight starts last season after arriving from Houston.

Here are some other notable cuts (track all of this weekend's roster moves here):

1. After failing to find a trade partner, the Denver Broncosreleased quarterback Mark Sanchez, the team announced. Soon after, the Dallas Cowboys announced that they signed Sanchez to backup Dak Prescott.

Aside from Sanchez, the Broncos also let go of running back Ronnie Hillman, who has spent the duration of his four-year career in Denver. 2015 was his most prolific season, in which he boasted 863 rushing yards and seven touchdowns. The emergence of rookie Devontae Booker proved Hillman expendable.

2. A crowded Baltimore Ravens running back room lost its senior member. Baltimore released running back Justin Forsett, leaving Terrance West, Javorious Allen and Kenneth Dixon on their roster.

3. No Bo! German import and draft hero Moritz Boehringerwas released by the Minnesota Vikings.

4. The New York Giants have waived running back Andre Williams. The release leaves New York with five running backs, including Rashad Jennings and Shane Vereen.

5. The Green Bay Packers will be moving on without their starting guard. Three-time Pro Bowler Josh Sitton was released by the team on Saturday.

6. The New York Jets have let go of wide receiver Kenbrell Thompkins, the team announced. Despite some clutch catches in his three weeks with the active roster in 2015, the former Patriots wideout will be best remembered in New York for failing to hold on to a crucial late-game pass in Week 17.

Joining Thompkins on the way out of town are two ex-general manager John Idzik draft picks: tight end Jace Amaro and cornerback Dee Milliner. Amaro, a second-round selection in 2014, has struggled to secure the starting job ever since going on IR with a shoulder injury to start the 2015 season. Milliner has also struggled with injuries, most recently with a hamstring. Both were waived on Saturday.

7. Rod Streater is heading elsewhere. On cut day, Streater was traded from the Kansas City Chiefs to the receiver-needy San Francisco 49ers. The five-year veteran has played every season in Oakland, but caught only one ball last year.

After signing quarterback Nick Foles in the offseason, the Chiefs retained Tyler Bray as a third option. Kansas City has released their remaining quarterbacks -- Aaron Murray and Stanford rookie Kevin Hogan.

8. Cecil Shorts III has been released by the Houston Texans. Shorts spent one season with the Texans after four with the Jaguars, catching 42 balls for 484 yards. The wideout was likely phased out of Houston's plans after the team drafted standout rookies Will Fuller and Braxton Miller. Houston also released safety Antonio Allen, who previously spent three seasons with the Jets.

9. The Carolina Panthers have waived fifth-round CB Zack Sanchez. Sanchez was one of "The Three Amigos," as they called themselves, along with James Bradberry and Daryl Worley drafted to help replace Josh Norman.

10. The Washington Redskins released tight end Logan Paulsen. Paulsen was entering his seventh season with the franchise and had totaled 801 yards and six touchdowns over his career. The tight end missed all of last year with a turf toe issue. Washington also parted ways with defensive tackle Cullen Jenkins, whom the Redskinssigned Monday.

Breakout running back Mack Brown also was released by Washington. There was speculation that Brown would make the final squad after a dominant showing in the final preseason game.

11. The Indianapolis Colts released running back Stevan Ridley less than one week after signing him, the team announced. The former Patriots and Jets running back, who has been hampered by an ACL injury, was cut by the Lions last week. Indy also released veteran linebacker Nate Irving. Irving started two games in one season with the Colts after spending four years in Denver.

12. The Philadelphia Eagles released linebacker Najee Goode.

13. The Arizona Cardinals waived quarterback Matt Barkley. Barkley was selected by the Eagles in the fourth round of the 2013 draft. He was traded to Arizona prior to last September.

14. The Chicago Bears released center Khaled Holmes and running back Jacquizz Rodgers.
