Davis Webb put himself in the position of being compared to Rams first-round draft pick Jared Goff when Webb, the former Texas Tech quarterback, decided to transfer to Cal for his final college season. That's no easy place to be, and Webb is sure to hear the "he's no Goff" talk from some.
But for at least one NFL executive, Goff is no Webb when it comes to arm talent.
"I didn't have high expectations for Webb. I thought he would be just a system type guy, considering where he came from," the executive told NFL.com analyst Daniel Jeremiah. "After studying him, I was shocked. He's really good. He's bigger than (Jared) Goff and he has a much better arm. He makes some rare throws."
NFL.com analyst Lance Zierlein has seen both QBs play for Cal in person -- Webb against Texas this year. Zierlein has yet to evaluate film of Webb, but from one live evaluation, he found the two quarterbacks' arms comparable.
"I think it's very similar. I think Goff had a good arm, I didn't think it was a great arm. He had plenty for an NFL arm. Webb can throw that deep ball pretty well," Zierlein said. "From the eyeball test, their arms are comparable."
Although Cal is 3-3, the passing offense hasn't been a problem. Webb has thrown for at least 300 yards in all but one game, and has a TD-INT ratio of 22-7. In other words, he's posting Goff-like numbers, and appears to have a Goff-like arm, if not better.
Whether he'll have a Goff-like draft status, however, is a long way from being determined.
