The Saints won big at the Superdome and Sean Payton loved every bit of it. Gregg Williams? Not so much.
The Saints were already sitting on a 42-21 lead over the Rams in the fourth quarter Sunday when Payton went into his bag of tricks. The result was a 50-yard touchdown pass, not from Drew Brees, but wide receiver Willie Snead, who connected with running back Tim Hightower for a 50-yard score that caught Los Angeles completely off guard.
If it seems a bit ruthless, consider the background. The Rams' defense is run by Gregg Williams, the former Saints defensive coordinator who was at the center of New Orleans' Bountygate scandal. Williams was suspended indefinitely for his role in the pay-for-injury scandal and was not retained by the Saints when the league reinstated him. Payton was suspended for one year for his role in the scandal as well.
The two men did not publicly discuss the nature of their relationship in the lead up to Sunday's game, but don't expect to see Williams at any of the anniversary celebrations of the Saints' Super Bowl team.
