Travis Kelce doesn't believe that Carl Cheffers is a good NFL referee. Turns out this is not a universally held opinion.
Cheffers, whom Kelce ripped after the Chiefs' season-ending loss to the Steelers on Sunday night, will be the referee for Super Bowl LI, according to multiple reports on Wednesday.
Cheffers called the holding penalty on Chiefs left tackle Eric Fisher that wiped out Kansas City's game-tying 2-point conversion late in the fourth quarter. The Chiefs failed in their second attempt, and Kelce didn't hold back when asked about the play after the game.
"The momentum's getting on our side and then just get our jugulars ripped out because the refs felt bad for James Harrison falling on the ground. It's ignorance. The ref, number 51, he shouldn't be able to wear a zebra jersey ever again," Kelce said. "He shouldn't even be able to work at a f------ Foot Locker."
A solid zinger yes, but Kelce's criticism was more than a little unfair. Andy Reid's opinion notwithstanding, most people seem to agree Fisher deserved the flag. We'll go ahead and attribute some of Kelce's frustration on an underlying reality: Kelce had one his the worst games on the biggest stage of his career.
