A huge market might not develop for former Chiefs star running back Jamaal Charles this offseason but, according to NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport, he won't need one.
There is "strong mutual interest" between the four-time Pro Bowler and the Seattle Seahawks, Rapoport said Thursday morning on Good Morning Football.
Seattle is very young at the running back position and has dotted its platoon with veterans over the past two seasons. Charles would provide Russell Wilson with a great pass catcher out of the backfield and allow the Seahawks to be more versatile with the recovering C.J. Prosise. While he's no sure thing having appeared in just eight games over the last two seasons, Charles appears to be coming off an important break when he got both knees repaired.
He's still only 30, and might have some mileage left to give.
When he's on, there are few running backs more devastating than Charles. When carrying the ball at least 15 times per season, Charles has never averaged fewer than five yards per carry. His last healthy season back in 2014 produced 1,033 rushing yards, nine touchdowns and another 40 catches for 291 yards and five touchdowns.
Charles represents one of the biggest curiosities in this free-agent group. While the floor and ceiling of other available backs like LeGarrette Blount are well-defined, there is no telling what a team might get out of Charles. Perhaps he can return to form, which could ignite the Seahawks in a way we have not seen since the team played with a fully healthy and engaged Marshawn Lynch.
