UCLA cornerback Fabian Moreau, a rising prospect for the 2017 NFL Draft, suffered a chest injury during his bench press at the Bruins' pro day workout Tuesday, per NFL Network's Omar Ruiz, who attended the pro day.
Moreau described the injury to Ruiz as a "little strain." He's expected to meet with UCLA medical staff on Tuesday afternoon.
Moreau ended his workout after the bench press -- he had intended to do positional drills as well. Moreau was on his ninth lift on the bench press when he asked for help from his spotter to complete the lift and then exited the weight room.
Bruins coach Jim Mora downplayed the significance of the injury.
"It's being evaluated. I don't think it's anything serious. I know he's back out here now. He's not working out. He did everything at the combine and had good numbers. A lot of guys decide to stand on what they did at the combine. Some guys come out and try to improve it," Mora said. "Fabian, I think his numbers were good enough at the combine that for him to come out here and work out today isn't that important. And all these teams that are really interested in him will be back to see him in an individual workout as well. So anything that happened to him I believe is minor and nothing to worry about."
Moreau (6-foot, 206 pounds) made 31 tackles for the Bruins this season with two interceptions and nine pass breakups. His size and speed (4.35-second 40-yard dash at the NFL Scouting Combine) make him an attractive draft option for NFL clubs in a deep field of cornerback prospects. He finished the combine with top-10 performances among cornerbacks in four drills: the 40, the vertical jump (38 inches), broad jump (11-4) and 60-yard shuttle (11.45). However, he did not participate in the bench press at the combine because of soreness in his shoulder.
NFL Network draft expert Mike Mayock added Moreau to his list of the draft's top five cornerbacks, ranking him No. 5 on Tuesday morning.
