The Titans have made Marcus Mariota a happy camper this offseason by bolstering their wide receiving corps. Now, Eric Decker joins the party in Nashville.
Decker and Tennessee agreed to terms on a one-year deal Sunday, the team announced. NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport reports the deal is worth $3.85 million, according to a source informed of the contract. The move comes less than a week after the wideout was officially released by the Jets. He had met with the Titans on Wednesday.
The veteran pass catcher was limited to just three games last season. He suffered two major injuries, a torn rotator cuff and hip injury, that derailed his 2016 campaign and resulted in surgery. In his three seasons with New York, Decker accumulated 2,183 yards and 19 touchdowns through the air.
Now, he's the latest weapon in the Titans' crop of exciting aerial targets. Tennessee selected Corey Davis, Taywan Taylor and Jonnu Smith all within the first three rounds of the 2017 NFL Draft. The newcomers will join Rishard Matthews and Delanie Walker, who both reached the 800-yard plateau this past season and combined for 16 scores.
For Decker, this one-year prove-it deal isn't the end of the world. Before his injury-riddled 2016, he had been one of the most consistent wideouts in the league in Denver and New York. At 30 years old, he can still command a line of suitors offering him multi-year contracts next offseason if he can get back on track with Mariota at the helm.
This latest acquisition will only cause the hype train in Tennessee to continue to move full steam ahead. The Titans' postseason drought goes all the way back to the 2008 Divisional Round. This latest edition of "exotic smashmouth" has the ingredients, though, to take advantage of a malleable AFC South.
