Niners to retain Katie Sowers as full-time coach

The NFL is set to have a full-time female assistant coach on the staff of one of its clubs for the second straight season.

Katie Sowers, a summer intern helping coach receivers for the San Francisco 49ers, will remain on staff for the 2017 season, 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan confirmed Tuesday.

The Mercury News' Cam Inman first reported the news.

Sowers broke into the league as an intern with the Atlanta Falcons in 2016, where she made an impression on current 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan, who was serving as the Falcons' offensive coordinator. She's since followed Shanahan to the Bay Area, where she's made similar impressions on a number of people in the building, Flanagan reported.

Sowers would become the league's second full-time female assistant in its history, following in the footsteps of Kathryn Smith, who served as the special teams quality control coach for the Buffalo Bills in 2016, but wasn't retained by new head coach Sean McDermott.

Sowers played football professionally and for the U.S. national team at a variety of positions, including wide receiver, served as a USA Football adviser, and as general manager of the Women's Football Alliance's Kansas City Titans, according to an earlier story written by Inman.
