Matt LaFleur 'in recovery mode' after Achilles surgery

Green Bay Packers coach Matt LaFleur offered an injury update Tuesday ... on himself.

The first-year skipper, who tore his Achilles last Wednesday while playing basketball, told reporters that he has undergone surgery and is "in recovery mode now."

LaFleur also expressed regret over the whole episode, wishing he could turn back time and stay off the hardwood.

"Yeah, if I had a crystal ball, I certainly wouldn't play basketball," LaFleur said Tuesday, per the team's website. "You know, this could've happened on the field. I'm sure it was bound to happen no matter what I was gonna do.

"But, you know like, after a long work day you've gotta get some exercise in and we've got a lot of guys on our staff that like to play basketball and there's a gym right in Lambeau. That's kind of been our routine, night time basketball. Especially when our families been away, the guys whose families haven't moved here and whatnot. We just get together and play some night time hoops."

LaFleur hopes his ordeal acts as a cautionary tale for his Packers players.

"Hopefully this will be a lesson to them not to play basketball," the 39-year-old coach added.

Most of Green Bay's players took LaFleur's setback in stride. Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers even read a prepared statement on the matter.

"I actually have a script here I was supposed to read about him because Jimmy [Graham] kind of ripped him about his athletic ability," Rodgers joked to reporters, per ESPN. "'I want to say that Matt LaFleur is a highly athletic former athlete who had an unfortunate accident in the gym. But because of his exceptional diet and work ethic, he'll be back sooner rather than later.'"

LaFleur is still more than three months away from his first regular-season game as head coach and said Tuesday that he doesn't expect to be hindered at all come September by his non-football injury.

"I don't anticipate coaching from the press box or anything like that. I think as long as I handle my business and follow the doctor's orders I don't foresee it being an issue come Week 1," LaFleur said. "As far as limitations during the preseason, there might be some, you might see me in a boot on the sideline, but like I said, I'm just going to take it one day at a time right now."
