Jalen Ramsey sounded comfortable with the knowledge that the Jacksonville Jaguarswill not renegotiate his contract with two years left on the deal.
The team's decision is understandable, but Ramsey wants it known that when the team does come calling on contract discussions, he's asking for the moon. In an Instagram Live chat with teammate Leonard Fournette talking about his contract, Ramsey noted he won't be giving any discount.
"Next year, especially after I ball, they're going to come to me, 'Hey, you know what, hey we want to holler at you...' (Whistles). That number is going to be so ungodly," he said. "(Whistles). That number going to be so ungodly, they're just going to look (gives wide-eyed stare).
"They're going to say 'oh, god, we can't get no discount? 20 percent off?' Nuh-uh (shakes head). I'm going to tell them last year y'all could have got that discount. This year? Nuh-uh (shakes head rapidly). I need all that."
Players rarely, if ever, should give a hometown discount. Ramsey noted that if the team wanted to shave a little off the overall bill, they wouldn't have approached him this year. Contract figures always rise.
"They could have got a little discount this year, maybe. Just a little sample, though. Just a little," he said.
Ramsey enters the fourth year of his rookie deal, set to earn $3.634 million in base salary. The Jags exercised the fifth-year option for the former No. 5 overall pick, which would pay him $13.7 million in 2020.
It's not the first time that the star cornerback has said he's going to ask for seven Brink's trucks when negotiations finally do begin. Earlier this week he cited a famous Deion Sanders line:
After a down 2018 campaign, if Ramsey recaptures his standing as the best cover corner in the game, the Jaguars should be comfortable paying him top-dollar.
