Chicago Bears defensive lineman Israel Idonije agreed to a two-year extension with the team Friday that will run through 2011.
The deal guarantees Idonije $3 million and adds $7 million to the overall deal, agent Drew Rosenhaus told NFL.com's Steve Wyche.
Idonije, 28, is coming off arguably his best season, registering 24 tackles with a career-high 3.5 sacks and being involved in six pass breakups.
The sixth-year player was due to become an unrestricted free agent after the 2009 season. The extension gives the Bears some flexibility on the defensive line, where starting right end Adewale Ogunleye enters the final year of his contract.
The 6-foot-6, 297 pounder entered the league as an undrafted free agent with the Cleveland Browns in 2003 and finished that season on the Bears' practice squad. He has appeared in 71 games, including eight starts, over the past five seasons with Chicago, registering 105 tackles, 5.5 sacks and six tackles for loss.
Also an asset on special teams, Idonije has tallied 29 special teams tackles and four blocked kicks during his career.
