Sheridan was fired by the Giants two weeks ago. In Miami, he replaces George Edwards, who left after five seasons to become the University of Florida's defensive coordinator.

Sheridan coached the Giants' linebackers from 2005 to 2008 and was the team's defensive coordinator in 2009. The Giants gave up 427 points this season, third-worst in the NFL.

The Dolphins announced the hiring Tuesday. They also hired Mike Nolan, who left the Denver Broncos on Monday, as their defensive coordinator.
