Mind-blowing stats for Super Bowl XLVII
Be the one dropping all the knowledge at the Super Bowl party. Reading these juicy tidbits will help you blow the minds of your friends on Super Sunday.

Brothers Jim and John Harbaugh met once before as NFL head coaches. On Thanksgiving Day of 2011, John's Baltimore Ravens defeated Jim's San Francisco 49ers, 16-6. The Ravens sacked 49ers quarterback Alex Smith nine times in the game, their highest sack total in 92 games under John Harbaugh. It is also the most sacks allowed by the 49ers in 36 games under Jim Harbaugh.

When scoring 20-plus points, Jim Harbaugh's San Francisco 49ers are 22-0-1 in their last 23 games. Including playoff games, the 49ers have only lost one game in the Harbaugh era when scoring 20 or more points.

Jim Harbaugh's all-time coaching record (including playoff games) is 27-8-1. Those 27 wins are tied with Steve Mariucci for the third-most wins by a head coach in his first two seasons in NFL history. The only coaches with more wins in their first two seasons are George Seifert (32) and Barry Switzer 28). Harbaugh, Mariucci and Seifert all attained those victories coaching the San Francisco 49ers. Switzer for the Dallas Cowboys (1994-95).

The San Francisco 49ers had the NFL's second-best scoring defense this season, allowing 17.1 points per game (the Seattle Seahawks had the top-rated scoring defense, allowing 15.3 points). The Ravens had 12th-ranked scoring defense in 2012, allowing 21.5 points per game. In Super Bowl history, teams with a top-two scoring defense are 16-5 when they do not face another top-two scoring defense on Super Sunday.

Among the 18 teams with multiple Super Bowl appearances, the San Francisco 49ers are the only team never to have lost in the Super Bowl, going 5-0. The next-best winning percentage among teams that reached multiple Super Bowls belongs to the Green Bay Packers and New York Giants, with each going 4-1 on Super Sunday.

The San Francisco 49ers are 21-11 in games played in the Superdome, including a 55-10 victory over the Denver Broncos in Super Bowl XXIV. Among teams with at least 10 games played in the Superdome, the 49ers have the league's best winning percentage (.656).

This will be the first Super Bowl without Tom Brady, Ben Roethlisberger or a Manning (Peyton or Eli) at quarterback since Super Bowl XXXVII, when Brad Johnson and Rich Gannon were the opposing quarterbacks. The Mannings, Brady and Roethlisberger have combined for eight Super Bowl wins in 12 appearances since the 2001 season.

What might be the most telling statistic explaining the San Francisco 49ers' perfection in the Super Bowl (five wins in five games) is that their starting quarterbacks (Joe Montana and Steve Young) and backup QBs (Young, Bill Musgrave and Elvis Grbac) have combined to throw 17 touchdowns and no interceptions.

The Baltimore Ravens' Joe Flacco (114.7) and San Francisco 49ers' Colin Kaepernick (105.9) were the two highest-rated passers in the 2012 playoffs. Alex Smith's 101.0 rating from the 2011 playoffs, which placed him third behind Drew Brees and Eli Manning last year, would rank him below Flacco, Kaepernick, Russell Wilson and Aaron Rodgers this year.

Through his first three games of the 2012 playoffs, Baltimore Ravens quarterback Joe Flacco has eight touchdowns and no interceptions. In NFL history, five previous quarterbacks have completed a postseason with eight-plus touchdowns and no interceptions: Joe Montana, Steve Young, Phil Simms, Troy Aikman and Drew Brees. Each won the Super Bowl and was named the Super Bowl MVP.

Since he entered the NFL in 2008, the Baltimore Ravens' Joe Flacco has the most playoff wins (eight) by a starting quarterback. In that time, Flacco has one more playoff wins than Tom Brady (three), Peyton Manning (two), Matt Ryan (one) and Jay Cutler (one), combined.

Southern California, Texas and Ohio State have never had a starting quarterback in the Super Bowl. As of Sunday, the University of Delaware will have two (Joe Flacco and Rich Gannon).

The San Francisco 49ers' 17-point comeback victory in the NFC Championship Game against the Atlanta Falcons was their second-largest ever in the postseason in franchise history. The 49ers' largest comeback wins in postseason history have been led by Jeff Garcia -- who led a 24-point comeback in the 2002 wild-card round against the New York Giants -- and Colin Kaepernick -- not Joe Montana or Steve Young.

Colin Kaepernick will become the fourth quarterback to start in the Super Bowl in the same season as his first career NFL start. Only Tom Brady, Kurt Warner and Vince Ferragamo have previously done so. Both Brady and Warner won the Super Bowl in their first season as starter.

Alex Smith was sacked nine times in the San Francisco 49ers' last game against the Baltimore Ravens (Week 12 of the 2011 season). Colin Kaepernick has been sacked a total of nine times in his last six games, and has not been sacked multiple times in any game since Week 14.

Michael Vick has had three rushes of 50-plus yards in his 10-year NFL career. Colin Kaepernick has three rushes of 50 or more yards since Week 13.

Colin Kaepernick had the NFL's best rating on passing attempts of 21-plus yards through the air (minimum of 10 attempts). He was the only player with at least 10 attempts to complete more than 50 percent of his passes that far downfield. Alex Smith had the NFL's next best completion percentage on throws of 21-plus yards (47.1 percent).

At the 2011 NFL Scouting Combine, the only quarterback to run a faster 40-yard dash time than Colin Kaepernick (4.53 seconds) was Baltimore Ravens backup Tyrod Taylor (4.51 seconds).

Baltimore Ravens running back Bernard Pierce has more rushing yards (401) than Ray Rice (397) since Jim Caldwell took over play-calling duties in Week 15.

San Francisco 49ers running back Frank Gore had 23 rushes for 119 yards against the Green Bay Packers in the divisional playoff round and 21 rushes for 90 yards against the Atlanta Falcons in the NFC Championship Game. In the Super Bowl, no 49ers player has ever rushed for more than the 75 yards that Roger Craig produced in Super Bowl XXIII.

San Francisco 49ers receiver Randy Moss has 67 career games with 100-plus receiving yards, second-most all-time, behind only Pro Football Hall of Famer Jerry Rice's 84 (including playoffs). Moss, however, has played in 42 consecutive games without reaching 100 receiving yards, including playoffs. He has not had a 100-plus yard receiving game in the playoffs since Bill Clinton was President of the United States. That came in the 2000 divisional playoff round against the New Orleans Saints, when he had 121 receiving yards for the Minnesota Vikings (the Vikings won that game, 34-16).

Baltimore Ravens linebacker Ray Lewis has 44 tackles in the 2012 playoffs, the most of any player this postseason. In the Ravens' Super Bowl run following the 2000 season, the then-25-year-old Lewis also had the most tackles of any player in the postseason, with 31.

Sunday, Feb. 3, 2013 will be 12 years and six days after Ray Lewis played in Super Bowl XXXV against the New York Giants. Only Junior Seau had a longer span in his career between Super Bowls.

Baltimore Ravens linebacker Ray Lewis has 41.5 career sacks, the first of which came in 1996 against then-Indianapolis Colts quarterback and current San Francisco 49ers coach Jim Harbaugh, who later became Lewis' teammate in Baltimore in the 1998 season.

Baltimore Ravens safaty Ed Reed grew up in St. Rose, La., about 17 miles away from the Superdome. Reed has eight career postseason interceptions, most among active players. The NFL record for most career postseason interceptions is shared by Charlie Waters of the Dallas Cowboys, Bill Simpson of the Los Angeles Rams and Buffalo Bills, and Ronnie Lott of the San Francisco 49ers and Los Angeles Raiders, all of whom had nine.

San Francisco 49ers kicker David Akers is tied with the Buffalo Bills' Scott Norwood for the third-worst regular-season field goal percentage for a kicker entering the Super Bowl since 1990. Norwood made only 69.0 percent of his kicks during that regular season -- the exact same percentage of kicks that Akers made during the 2012 season. Norwood then famously missed a 47-yarder wide right in Super Bowl XXV against the New York Giants. Norwood would be even worse the next season, making 62.1 percent of his kicks (en route to another Bills Super Bowl defeat).
